Alternatives to Anchors

Share

Right on! I am so sick of tabloid “news” and the shrill, hyped-up delivery of the anchors (“It’s News to TV’s Breathless Anchors,” by Howard Rosenberg, March 1). They are so self-congratulatory about the less-than-meaningful stories they “report” that I am forced to look elsewhere for news. CNN is less insulting, and there are always other sources, such as NPR, PBS and the daily newspapers.

I had the privilege of working in the CBS public affairs department in Hollywood under the directorship of Chet Huntley. Jack Beck was the genius director of news. In those days, before CBS went public, William S. Paley allowed the news departments to run “in the red.” After all, the airwaves reputedly belonged to the public. We, the listeners, no longer get that kind of news. Perhaps it is our fault for not turning off the dreck.
