From Staff and Wire Reports

In what is a rarity in skiing these days, an American man won a World Cup event Friday.

Daron Rahlves won a downhill race at Kvitfjell, Norway, for his first World Cup victory, the first in any World Cup discipline by a U.S. man since 1995.

The 26-year-old from Truckee, Calif., edged Didier Cuche of Switzerland by nine-hundredths of a second on Lillehammer’s Olympic course.

“This is so good!” Rahlves said. “Last year was the worst in my life when I dislocated my hip.”

Rahlves posted his victory on the same hill where Tommy Moe won the 1994 Olympic downhill gold medal for the United States. It was also where Kyle Rasmussen became the last American male winner on the World Cup tour, a downhill in 1995.

Rahlves’ previous best downhill finish this season was 15th at Lake Louise, Canada.

Jurisprudence

Former Carolina Panther receiver Rae Carruth will not cut his ties to the NFL to claim $30,000 severance pay because he is not guilty of charges that he masterminded the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend, his lawyer, David Rudolf, said.
