DMV Wants Fan to Give Up ‘Offensive’ Redskins Plates
A Washington Redskins fan has been asked to give up his personalized license plates.
Some American Indians have complained that George Correa’s license plate reading “RDSKINS” is offensive.
The Department of Motor Vehicles agrees, saying the plates carry connotations “offensive to good taste and decency.”
American Indian groups nationwide have protested sports mascots and team nicknames connected to their heritage, including the Redskins and the Atlanta Braves.
Correa doesn’t want to give up the plates.
He says he’s had them since 1980 and doesn’t view them as a political statement. He says the plates have Washington Redskins bumper stickers next to them and can only be construed as support for the football team.
A ruling on whether he can keep the plates is expected in 30 days.
