Re “Jeb Bush’s Anti-Affirmative Action Plan Ignites Firestorm,” March 7: Race and gender preferences have never won at the ballot box. They consistently lose by large margins in the polls. They lost in California and Washington and, if on the ballot, will surely lose in Florida.

Yet your article casts Gov. Jeb Bush as the beleaguered one for his opposition to race and gender preferences. State initiatives such as Prop. 209 are termed “divisive,” as if quotas and set-asides don’t divide people. And nowhere in the article is there any mention of the actual ballot words “race and gender preferences.” Rather, the issue is clothed in the nebulous phrase “affirmative action.” Sadly, such biased coverage has come to be expected of The Times.
