A local church has expressed concerns over the city’s plans to install a traffic signal on El Toro Road.

Officials with St. Nicholas Catholic Church have told the city they are concerned about being required to remove a barrier that separates parking lots of the church and an Olive Garden restaurant.

The council approved the plan last month. It would modify and install eight traffic lights along a one-mile stretch of El Toro Road from the intersection of Paseo de Valencia to Calle Sonora.

One signal would allow drivers leaving the restaurant to drive into the church parking lot before exiting onto El Toro Road. Church officials said the church could be liable if someone leaving the restaurant had an accident on church property.

Mayor Bert Hack said the council will have to make some changes if the church fails to accept the condition.

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the board room of Leisure World’s Administration Building, 23522 Paseo de Valencia.
