Golden West Shuts Out Orange Coast in Softball

Jen McCann drove in the game’s only run in the seventh inning to give Golden West a 1-0 victory over Orange Coast in Orange Empire Conference softball Wednesday.

Tina Tuskewicz pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits, to get the victory for visiting Golden West (10-11, 3-4).

Orange Coast’s Monica Ortega had a no-hitter until the seventh, when she surrendered a run on two hits. The Pirates fell to 14-11, 3-6 on the season.

In other conference games:

Cypress 6, Riverside 3--Koral King went four for four with two RBIs and Sasha Campbell had three hits, three runs and an RBI for host Cypress (13-12-1, 7-2).

Saddleback 5, Santa Ana 2--Jen Carlisle drove in the tying run in the third and second baseman Nicki Marion tripled home the go-ahead runs in the fifth for the visiting Gauchos (14-8, 6-2). Tracy Alcaraz (4-1) surrendered seven hits and struck out five. Santa Ana fell to 8-7-1, 5-4.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s golf:

Riverside 386, Santa Ana 387, Orange Coast 389, Palomar 404--Blake Humbles shot a one-under 70 to lead Riverside to the win at Meadow Lake. Dave Lauder shot a three-over 74 to lead Santa Ana and Mike Akahoshi led Orange Coast (12-4, 7-2) with a four-over 75.

Saddleback wins--The Gauchos (9-0) won the battle of the conference’s unbeaten teams, besting Golden West, 373-387. Irvine Valley finished at 400 and Cypress had 407. Saddleback’s Lonnie Charleson shot a one-under 71 for individual honors, and Jeff Greenfield of Golden West (8-1) had a 72.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

El Camino 5, Orange Coast 4--Lot Keijzer won her singles match, 6-1, 6-4, and teamed with Erica Goode to win their doubles match, 6-3, 6-1, but it wasn’t enough for the Pirates (5-5, 3-3).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Santa Monica 0--Matt Davis had nine kills and Dave Cornett and Marshall Roberts had five blocks each for host Golden West (6-1), which won, 15-6, 15-4, 15-3.

Long Beach 3, Irvine Valley 1--Alex Cervantes had 26 kills and Brennan Velasco had 22 for visiting Long Beach (6-1), which won, 15-10, 13-15, 15-11, 15-8. Irvine Valley is 4-3.
