Capistrano Unified School District trustees have updated the district’s 15-year-old sex education curriculum amid questions about whether it is being introduced early enough.

“Students are engaging in sex younger than we think they are,” Trustee Mildred Daley Pagelow said during this week’s school board meeting.

“Students do tell us that they experiment sexually,” said board President Sheila Benecke, adding that graduating seniors surveyed a few years ago said sex education was delivered too late.

The curriculum, established in 1985, will be updated to reflect new medical information and state Education Code requirements. All grades will view new instructional videos.
