FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are moving up and bigger bass are stirring in the lower lake. Matt Tryk, Harbor City, 13- and 10-pounders, along with a few smaller ones on waterdogs. Some trout and catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are active near the dam, but still deep at about 50 feet and biting mostly on anchovies. Trout action is best and most baits are working. A 7 1/2-pound largemouth bass was caught on a chartreuse spinnerbait.

Ventura County

LAKE PIRU--Trout limits have been fairly common for trollers (Needlefish) and bait fishermen (night crawlers, Power Bait). Bass fishing is picking up for those using crankbaits.

LAKE CASITAS--Finally, some big bass. Todd Thigpin, Santa Paula, 16-2 and 7-8 bass on swim-baits. Rod Thigpin caught a 10-11. Mark Newman, Camarillo, 14-0. The list goes on. Trout action is fair at Wadleigh Arm. A 4-pounder tops the list.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing is fair and some of the fish hefty. Oscar Nunez, Ojai, 8-pound trout on unknown bait. A 6-pounder was caught on a Rapala. Lots of limits of smaller fish. Bass are scattered because of the rising lake level.

San Bernardino County

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout and catfish are tugging on lines, though sporadically. Putting a couple on a stringer is not too difficult with Power Bait or worms. Catfish, averaging 2-3 pounds, are also taking worms.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Spring trout season is underway, and loads of trout are in the lake. Things are looking up in another way too, as the water level is rising steadily. Private boat-launching should be available soon.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Big trout are still going in, and big trout are still coming out. Tops was a 13-6 by Sam Montoya, Anaheim, on Power Bait. He also landed a 9-9.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Many of the trout are gathered in the middle, which is good for boaters. Shore fishermen are doing OK at the inlet using night crawlers, salmon eggs and Power Bait. Bass have started to spawn and those casting plastic worms close to structure were getting fish to 7-4.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Fishing is much better than it was earlier this week, but still not great, though the chance for a big trout or two exists. A half-dozen or so weighed in at 10 pounds or more this week.

LAKE PERRIS--Lot of small bass, but the big ones have grown leery of hooks. Bluegill activity is on the rise, a sure sign of spring. Trout are biting sporadically on standard stuff.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass action is fair, with fish biting on crawdads and plastic worms. Striped bass are stirring more too. Catfish can be caught at the dam.

San Diego County

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente had the big blue catfish, but Sutherland had a good week too. Lake records fell for largemouth bass (16.55 pounds, caught on a Brown Jib, whatever that is) and crappie (3.55 pounds, caught on a sinking minnow). Bass action is fair to good at all but Miramar and Murray.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--21 anglers (1 boat): 100 red rock cod, 110 rockfish.

PORT SAN LUIS (Patriot Sportfishing)--15 anglers (1 boat): 6 rock cod, 7 rockfish, 120 red rock cod, 4 bolina, 1 salmon (released).

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--20 anglers (1 boats): 10 calico bass, 27 sand bass, 32 sculpin, 2 whitefish, 8 rockfish.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--34 anglers (3 boats): 60 rockfish, 22 sculpin, 2 whitefish, 1 sheephead, 15 red snapper, 5 halibut, 31 calico bass, 1 bonito.

PORT HUENEME--41 anglers (2 boats): 2 sheephead, 196 rockfish, 10 whitefish, 10 lingcod, 23 red snapper.

MARINA DEL REY--68 anglers (4 boats): 15 halibut, 47 sand bass, 20 sculpin, 45 whitefish, 250 rockfish.

REDONDO--49 anglers (3 boats): 24 halibut, 116 sculpin, 5 sand bass.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--48 anglers (3 boats): 6 white seabass, 25 calico bass, 43 whitefish, 63 blue perch, 24 sheephead, 14 red snapper, 8 salmon grouper, 7 sand bass, 2 halibut, 2 sculpin, 1 barracuda. (22nd St. Landing)--39 anglers (1 boat): 2,240 sand dabs, 165 rockfish, 27 sculpin, 24 salmon grouper, 16 red snapper, 4 whitefish.

LONG BEACH (Belmont Pier)--20 anglers (1 boat): 162 rock cod, 2 cow cod. (Los Alamitos Bay, Marina Sportfishing)--31 anglers (1 boat): 41 rockfish, 9 sculpin, 64 rock cod, 27 salmon grouper, 5 red snapper. (Pierpoint Landing)--46 anglers (2 boats): 9 white seabass, 18 calico bass, 95 rockfish, 62 whitefish, 8 sculpin, 4 sheephead, 7 red snapper.

SEAL BEACH--22 anglers (1 boat): 2 sand bass, 3 sculpin, 1 halibut, 30 halibut (released).

NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--7 anglers (1 boat): 5 sand bass, 32 rockfish, 2 sculpin.

DANA WHARF--38 anglers (2 boats): 18 calico bass, 20 sand bass, 3 mackerel, 1 halibut, 2 rockfish, 2 sculpin, 2 sheephead.

OCEANSIDE (Helgren’s)--62 anglers (3 boats): 224 rockfish, 118 sculpin, 16 whitefish, 5 sheephead, 10 sand bass, 5 calico bass.

SAN DIEGO (H&M; Landing, Fisherman’s, Point Loma)--66 anglers (4 boats): 37 sand bass, 2 sheephead, 64 rockfish, 69 sculpin, 29 whitefish, 105 rockcod.
