College Players Win Titles

Two local college golfers won titles Monday at the Orange County Championships at Strawberry Farms.

UC Irvine’s Jeff Coburn, a freshman from Ojai Nordhoff High, won the men’s championship, defeating Costa Mesa’s Danny Lane in the 18-hole match-play final, 5 and 4.

Coburn closed the match with a birdie on the par-four 14th hole after hitting his approach shot from about 150 yards to within one inch.

Lane, a former Laguna Beach High football and baseball standout, is the assistant general manager of Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club and is part of the management group at Strawberry Farms. Lane, 30, beat Greg Sabella of Laguna Niguel, 4 and 3, in the semifinals. Coburn beat Michael Wanamaker of Costa Mesa, 4 and 3, in the other semifinals. Sabella beat Wanamaker, 2-up, in the third-place match.

The women’s championship flight was decided by a playoff between two members of the Saddleback College golf team. Karlie Ward of Coto de Caza beat Olivia Slutzsky of San Juan Capistrano on the first hole of the playoff.

Ward, a freshman from Capistrano Valley High, and Slutzsky each shot 81-72 153 to force the playoff. Newport Beach’s Brenda Parrott, who played part of the 1999 season for Saddleback, shot 164 to finish third.

GOING LONG

Art Sellinger, a two-time national long-drive champion, will perform hitting exhibitions April 1 at noon and 3 p.m. at The Islands Golf Center in Anaheim.

Sellinger is the all-time money winner among National Long Drive competitors and can hit a ball 250 yards with a putter.
