Drive to Revive Jewish Shabbat

Jews across America and Canada will aim to rekindle interest in Shabbat, the weekly day of rest, at events Friday evening. More than 750 synagogues and 70 campus Hillel groups will be opened to unaffiliated Jews, including an estimated 3,000 college students.

In Orange County, the Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot of Irvine will host a catered Shabbat dinner at 5:45 p.m. to mark the event, called “Shabbat Across America.”

The program, which will include Shabbat songs, stories and dance and a 7:30 p.m. service led by Rabbi Bernie King, will be held at 3652 Michelson Drive in Irvine.

Dinner reservations are required and can be made by calling (949) 857-2226. Cost is $15 for adults, $12 for ages 3-11.

* The John Brown University Cathedral Choir will be in concert at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church of Orange. The concert is part of a spring break choir tour of Southern California. The church is at 191 N. Orange St., Orange. (714) 538-2341.

* Nutritional consultant Elaine Willis will lead the seminar “A Lifeplan for High-Level Wellness” from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Seal Beach Church of Religious Science. Tickets are $15. * The Rev. Alan Landes will deliver the message “Moses: Foolishly Written in Concrete” at 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Landes will explore whether the Ten Commandments are outdated. There will be a conference, “Spirituality and Mental Illness,” from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 1. Cost is $10.
