SBA Reauthorization Expected by Summer
Looks like the Small Business Administration is on track for reauthorization on Capitol Hill.
The House voted 410 to 11 this month to reauthorize the SBA and its programs until 2003. The Senate has yet to vote on its version, which just passed out of the Senate Committee on Small Business.
Observers say the only likely sticking points will be some extracurricular legislation attached to the Senate version that would give the SBA’s Office of Advocacy more independence and make the Internal Revenue Service more responsive to small businesses.
David D’Onofrio, legislative analyst with National Small Business United in Washington, expects a deal by early summer.
“Some difficulties remain, but the overarching goal is clear,” he said. “Congress wants to encourage the continued growth of small businesses.”
