PARK AND READ

The daily commute can be scary enough, but what about truly challenging motoring adventures? “The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook,” by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht (Chronicle Books, 1999; $14.95, 176 pages), presents 40 predicaments worthy of the title. Among them are eight scenarios involving motor vehicles (how to escape from a sinking car, how to jump from a moving car, and so forth), with the authors’ distillations of the advice of real-life experts. Read it as a serious must-have guide or a source of creepy kicks--the authors’ deadpan delivery serves either approach--and just be glad you’ll probably never need to consult Scenario 13: How to wrestle free from an alligator.
