Sports Chalet Acquires Chain of Golf Shops

La Canada-based Sport Chalet Inc. said it had acquired a chain of golf shops that operated as separate businesses inside stores owned by the sporting goods retailer. Consumers are expected to see no change at the 14 John Wells Golf Shops that since 1996 had operated leased departments inside more than two-thirds of Sport Chalet’s 22 locations. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. John Wells, who founded the chain in 1974, will join Sport Chalet as director of golf operations and will continue to do business at four local golf course pro shops. Employees of John Wells Golf Shop will retain their positions with Sport Chalet, company officials said. Sport Chalet shares fell 75 cents to close at $4.75 on Nasdaq.
