Steven M. Odre has been named senior vice president, general counsel and secretary at Amgen in Thousand Oaks, succeeding George A. Vandeman, who is retiring after almost five years at the company.

Odre, who has been with the biotech giant for 14 years, had been vice president for intellectual property and associate general counsel, and he was a member of Amgen’s Operating Committee.

“For many years, Steve has been a key member of Amgen’s management and legal teams and has contributed to successfully defending our products and hard-earned intellectual property rights,” said Gordon Binder, chairman and chief executive.

Vandeman will continue to serve as senior vice president for corporate development until July 31. After that, he will be a special advisor to the company on a number of matters, including mergers and acquisitions.

Vandeman joined Amgen in July 1995 from the international law firm Latham & Watkins, where he had worked for almost 30 years.
