Huntington Beach’s Reyes 2nd at Lower Trestles

Huntington Beach surfer Tim Reyes recorded one of the top heat scores Tuesday at the World Qualifying Tour surf contest at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.

Reyes’ score of 22.50 placed him second behind Australia’s Mick Faning, who had the day’s top score of 23.70 in the round of 128 of the men’s Junior Pro in the third stop of the World Qualifying Tour.

Reyes had the top individual wave score of 9.25. Both surfers advanced to the round of 96, which continues today.

Other county surfers who advanced were Richie Collins of Newport Beach, Brom Heussenstamm of Laguna Beach, Chris Drummy of San Clemente and Scott Finn of Dana Point.

Peru’s Sofia Mulaovich, 16, who has won the last two WQT events, pulled some of the top rides of the day to win her heat in the first round of the women’s competition.

Jayme Gee of San Clemente and Alisa Cairns of Laguna Beach also won their heats.

Surfing continues today with the completion of the men’s round of 128 at 8 a.m., followed by the round of 96.
