Seven community-based organizations in the San Fernando Valley received $95,000 in grants Tuesday from GTE California to promote literacy and education.

Pacoima Urban Village will use its $10,000 grant to expand a Spanish literacy program for adults, which prepares students to learn English. Eleven students--some who had never been in a classroom and could not properly hold a pencil--graduated from the program in December knowing how to read and write in Spanish and do simple math problems, said Jorge Lara, executive director.

“Once people learn the structure in their own language, it’s easy for them to learn English as a second language,” Lara said, adding that new classes may start as soon as June 1, involving 30 to 45 students.
