Warning Signals Ordered for Ice Cream Trucks
If the jingle of the ice cream truck roving through your neighborhood annoys you, get ready for a new sound from the street vendors: warning signals when their vehicles back up.
That is one of the new requirements of an ice cream truck ordinance adopted by the City Council on Wednesday.
The ordinance also limits the vendors to selling food and drinks. They must have valid county health permits and stay at least 500 feet away from any school.
Under the new ordinance, first-time fines will increase to $100 from $25. Second violations will set vendors back $200 instead of $50.
In 1991, accidents involving ice cream trucks backing up into children prompted the council to adopt recommendations regulating the vendors. The ordinances were drafted three years later, but they languished in committee for years.
