From the Mouth of a Babe, a Lipstick Inspired by Precocious Eloise

She orders from room service. She rides the elevators. She’s fresh but fabulous.

Six-year-old Eloise, who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York City (and in Kay Thompson’s popular children’s book, “Eloise”), is the embodiment of spirited youth.

Now grown-ups can get Eloise’s look without having to don her tiny party shoes and short, pleated jumpers.

Carol Shaw, creator of Lorac cosmetics, recently introduced a lipstick inspired by the terribly precocious child who has been around since 1955 but still looks 6. Eloise, the lipstick, is a rich pink shimmer shade, which is available at Henri Bendel, Sephora and select Macy’s and Nordstrom stores for $17.50. Call (800) 845-0705 for more information.

Be like Eloise. Use it to write on mirrors.

If it hadn’t been for Pendleton, the Beach Boys might have never come to be.

The band, known for its songs about sand, sun and surf, called itself the Pendletones after the members’ favorite shirts when the group formed in the early ‘60s.

The Beach Boys may have changed their name--and favorite clothes--but Pendleton shirts haven’t changed much.

For 75 years, Pendleton’s plaid wool button-downs have been wardrobe staples for men and women. Launched in 1924, the shirt originally came in two styles and 26 colors, and cost $6.25. The company has since updated its shirts by improving washability, making them softer and in worsted weights. There are now 10 styles and 75 patterns.

Sorry, Beach Boys, Pendleton doesn’t make Hawaiian shirts.

Lots of little girls don’t dress like little girls; they dress like miniature women.

Ten-year-olds wear tube tops. Eight-year-olds don platform heels. And let’s not even bring up the subject of bikinis.

Relief is in sight. American Girl, the company that created the popular books and dolls by the same name, features hip, attractive, age-appropriate clothing and accessories designed for girls 8 and older in its spring American Girl Gear catalog.

The clothes are bright and feminine without being dowdy. There are capris and tank tops, shorts and T-shirts for play, twin-sets, sundresses and skirts for dress-up. And the bathing suits--tropical-print bikinis with boy shorts and tankinis--are hip, but not too revealing.

The accessories--kerchiefs, beaded jewelry and bucket hats--are pretty cute too.
