Swed Gets It Write

I generally dislike both Mark Swed’s music reviews and the sort of modern musical garbage he waxes enthusiastic about, and from his description of Marino Formenti’s survey of 20th century music at LACMA, I would have found those evenings to be nightmares gone bad, badder, baddest (“Liquid Lyricism of Marino Formenti, Demon Pianist,” May 6).
But his review is a tour de force of critical writing. What a splendid job of conveying a performance which to some would have been utterly wonderful, and to others, including me, would have been an “I’d pay any price to escape this” event.
To say it more succinctly, I hate his musical taste, but boy, can he write!
