2 Local Navy Projects Win House Approval

The House of Representatives approved funding for two Ventura County Navy projects, Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) announced Tuesday.

The House approved $10.2 million to build a new ship defense combat engineering facility at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Port Hueneme, and $12.6 million to expand and renovate the Point Mugu Range Operations Center. The funding requests now move to the Senate for approval.

The Port Hueneme money would pay for the replacement of 14 temporary trailers and Quonset huts, as well as the 82,000-square-foot defense facility. The current buildings do not meet fire and safety codes, officials said. The $12.6 million would allow officials to support new programs at the Point Mugu center.

Later this week, the House also will consider legislation that would allow the Navy to sign a contract with the Port of Hueneme allowing the port to use Wharf 3 for commercial shipping.
