Come Friday, students, parents and friends of St. Cyril Catholic School will reach for the stars in celebration of the school’s 50th birthday, school officials said.

More than 3,000 visitors are expected at the Springfest, which will include rides, raffles, concerts, plenty of food and other activities to live up to the theme “Reach for the Stars,” said Ellen Van Patten, one of the organizers.

“We are going to have a bigger event this year,” Van Patten said. “St. Cyril is this tiny school. People pass by, but people never know it is there. Now they will.”

St. Cyril of Jerusalem Catholic Church built the school in 1950 when parishioners saw a need to educate their younger members, school officials said. The school started with one class and now serves about 300 students.

The celebration will continue though Sunday with such events as Irish step dancing, games and performances from bands including Mambo Crew, Pumpkin Jam and Imagine--The Beatles Tribute.

“It will not be your average fair. It’s more like state fair,” she said.

Admission is free at the campus, 15520 Ventura Blvd. in Encino. For more information call the school at (818) 501-4155.
