Study Links Dialysis, Coronary Artery Calcification in Young

Young patients undergoing kidney dialysis have a much higher level of calcification of their coronary arteries than their healthy peers, an indication that they may succumb to heart disease at an early age, research has found. Coronary artery calcification is common in older dialysis patients, nearly half of whom die of heart disease.
UCLA researchers report in today’s New England Journal of Medicine that calcification was present in 14 of 16 (88%) patients age 20 to 30, but in only 5% of the control group.
