Rudolph Giuliani

Re “It’s Not the Deed, It’s the Hypocrisy,” Commentary, May 16: According to Robert Scheer, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was in the midst of “moral decay” as he left a failing marriage for another woman. It’s obvious that Scheer is reaching.

Also, according to Scheer, no one should ever pass judgment on strip joints, winos or denounce an art exhibit if he is in Mayor Giuliani’s situation. With Scheer’s theory of moral relativism, no one should ever pass judgment on anything or anyone unless he is God himself.

* Scheer, who often walks to the left of my personal politics, has spoken the unmitigated truth regarding Giuliani’s religious views, and I applaud his statement of plain fact. It has long been an interest of mine that those who claim allegiance to God and country most loudly are often no more adherent to “moral” behavior than the so-called godless liberals they attack. What’s going on here? Are we so blind as to not notice the inherent hypocrisy of those (mentioned by name in his article) who lined up to remove the president from office when they themselves had all lied under one oath or another?

I had once thought that Hillary Rodham Clinton was needlessly and egotistically running against a man who could no doubt make a decent contribution to the U.S. Senate. Now it appears she may be a breath of fresh air.
