Islamic Strike Shuts Down Cities
A strike called by Islamic clerics shut down all major cities in Pakistan as hundreds of rock-throwing students in Karachi rioted for a second day over the killings of two religious leaders. Police, paramilitary forces and the army tried to curb the violence. Gunmen killed Maulana Mohammed Yusuf Ludhyanvi, principal of Banuri Town religious school, and Abdur Rehman, a teacher at the school, in a daytime ambush Thursday. No one took responsibility for the killings. Religious leaders had called for a strike to press the army-led government to guarantee Islamic laws in the constitution.
