Tamil Tigers Shell Key Port in North
Rebels shelled the outskirts of Jaffna’s main port as the Sri Lankan air force bombed guerrilla artillery targeting the only military airport in the northern peninsula. Two artillery shells fell near the Kankesanturai seaport, west of Palali air base. The air base and the port are the only functional supply lines for 40,000 troops battling to halt a Tamil Tiger takeover of Jaffna, which the separatist Tamils consider their cultural capital. A Norwegian peace mission was scheduled to arrive in Colombo, the capital, on Monday to help end the fighting.
