The Capistrano Unified School District wants to head off any attempt by the Los Angeles Unified School District to funnel state construction money away from local schools.

On Monday, the Capistrano Unified Board of Trustees resolved to oppose a Los Angeles district lawsuit that alleges that the state allocation board does not give it enough money.

If the lawsuit is successful, Proposition 1A money approved for Capistrano Unified and other districts could be redirected to Los Angeles.

“It could have a drastic impact on districts dependent on state funding for new schools,” Supt. James A. Fleming said.

Last fall, Capistrano Unified voters approved a school bond that is supposed to be matched with state funds to provide $166 million for four new schools.
