Gang Member Sentenced for Violating Injunction

A 21-year-old member of the Harpys gang has been sentenced to 100 days in jail for violating terms of his probation by associating with another gang member in a supermarket parking lot.

The sentence, pronounced Tuesday, is the third time Jesus Humberto Andrade will be jailed for publicly associating with fellow gang members. In 1998, Andrade was the first man convicted of violating an injunction against the Harpys, who were accused of terrorizing residents and merchants in a neighborhood north of USC.

“He’s an active member of the Harpys,” said Deputy City Atty. Shawn Nelson.

The first time he violated the injunction--which bars the Harpys from associating publicly in an area bordered by Normandie Avenue, Figueroa Street and Washington and Jefferson boulevards--Andrade was sentenced to a week in jail.

Less than a month later, Andrade was sentenced to 100 days in jail for violating the injunction twice more. As a condition of his three years on summary probation, he was forbidden to associate with members of any gang, especially the Harpys.

Last June, Andrade was arrested again in a supermarket parking lot in the 2600 block of Vermont Avenue, by police responding to a call of shots fired.
