Teachers Protest in Mexico City; 2 Hurt in Clashes
A massive protest by teachers paralyzed downtown Mexico City for hours Thursday night and erupted into clashes that injured at least two police officers, police said.
Teachers from around the country, who are demanding better salaries, have demonstrated during the past week, blocking main thoroughfares in a march from the historic center toward the presidential residence.
“There are some 15,000 teachers,” a Mexico City police spokesman said.
Riot police blocked the demonstrators about 500 yards from the presidential residence, causing scuffles that left two officers injured, the spokesman said.
The protesters, members of a dissident sector of the pro-government National Education Workers Syndicate, vowed to continue their street protests until their demands are met.
Mexico’s Education Ministry has said that it cannot meet the teachers’ demands for salary increases of as much as 100%.
