Robert Rolens; Former Ventura Schools Official

Robert E. Rolens, a former assistant superintendent of the Ventura Unified School District, died at his Ventura home Monday after a battle with lung cancer. He was 85.

Rolens was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Murphysburough, Ill., and spent his teen years in Southern California. He earned a master’s degree in anatomy and physiology from the University of Redlands in 1938.

While in college, Rolens was a star sprinter for the school’s track team and heavily involved in neurological research, according to his family.

Rolens married Mildred Sorenson in 1939. He served as an Army intelligence officer during World War II and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force.

After the war, he worked as a chemistry instructor in Ventura in 1947 and was one of the founders of Ventura College.

He retired in the 1970s as an assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum at the Ventura school district. During his tenure, Rolens helped introduce computers into Ventura’s schools, his family said.

After retiring, Rolens and his wife traveled extensively. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

Rolens is survived by his wife; a son, Jim Rolens of Santa Cruz; two daughters, Lin Rolens of Santa Barbara and Barbara Lambrichts of Brasschaat, Belgium; and four grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no formal services. The family suggests donations be made to Caregivers at 2021 Sperry Ave., Suite 47, in Ventura.
