Ordonez May Be Out 6 Weeks

New York Met shortstop Rey Ordonez is expected to be sidelined six weeks after his left forearm was broken Monday during a first-inning collision with the Dodgers’ F.P. Santangelo at Dodger Stadium.

Ordonez left the game after colliding with Santangelo, who was attempting to steal second. The three-time Gold Glove shortstop made a spectacular play to tag him out. New York will recall Melvin Mora, who has been on the disabled list since May 13 with a cut on his right index finger.

Third baseman Scott Rolen, sidelined since spraining his left ankle a week ago, was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Philadelphia Phillies. The move is retroactive to last Wednesday, the day after Rolen turned his ankle as he rounded first base in a game at Houston. The Phillies recalled left-handed pitcher Bryan Ward from triple-A Scranton (Pa.).

Pitcher Todd Ritchie, once a bargain buy as a minor league free agent for the Pittsburgh Pirates, signed a two-year contract extension worth about $5.25 million. In 10 starts this season, Ritchie is 2-3 with a 4.68 ERA. Ritchie, who is making $380,000 this season, would have been eligible for salary arbitration after this season.

Sean DePaula became the sixth Cleveland pitcher to go on the disabled list, sidelined with tendinitis in his right elbow. DePaula, who has pitched with a sore elbow since spring training, underwent an MRI on Monday morning. Cleveland bought the contract of right-hander Jared Camp from double-A Akron (Ohio) to take DePaula’s spot.

Former Texas Ranger Juan Gonzalez missed what would have been his first game against his former team when he was scratched from the Detroit Tigers’ lineup because of a foot injury. Tiger Manager Phil Garner said he didn’t know whether Gonzalez would be available for any of the three games against Texas at Detroit. Gonzalez strained his left foot Saturday.
