The Chess Club is launching a six-week competition Friday.

Registration for the Juniper Duel Chess Tourney begins at 7 p.m. The competition starts at 7:45 p.m.

The tournament is open to everyone, with the winners of each round playing each other every week until a champion is determined.

The cost of registration is $6 for nonresidents and $5 for residents. Children younger than 18 are half-price.

A trophy or cash prize will be presented to the winner, with the possibility of another award for game improvement, said Gerald Schain, the club’s director.

The competition will be at Veterans Memorial Hall, 209 N. Orange St., where the club has played since 1973. Information: (562) 691-2393.
