LOCAL NOTES

UC Irvine hosts a men’s basketball exhibition against Team Concept at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bren Center.

Irvine never got untracked Friday in its exhibition opener and was soundly defeated by South Dakota, 73-60.

The Anteaters open the regular season by hosting Howard at 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

BASEBALL

Woodbridge pitcher Brian Beck has signed to play baseball at UCLA and Irvine catcher Jon deVries has signed with LSU, according to Woodbridge Coach Bob Flint.

* Dave Austin has resigned as baseball coach at Los Amigos after five seasons.

SOFTBALL

Elizabeth Bendig, a shortstop and pitcher for Foothill, has committed to Stanford to play softball, according to Coach Joe Gonzalez.

Bendig was 10-1 with a 0.09 earned-run average last season.

FOOTBALL

Chapman’s season comes to a close at 1 p.m. Saturday at Menlo College in Atherton.

Chapman wide receiver Bobby Calderon, held scoreless last week in a 38-6 loss at Azusa Pacific, has eight touchdown catches, one short of the school’s single-season record.

SOCCER

Vanguard University, which finished second in the Golden State Athletic Conference, placed five men’s soccer players on the All-GSAC Team. Seniors Diego Goni, Joshua McLeish, Matt Resor and Matt Sarinas, plus freshman Esaul Mendoza (Estancia), were selected.

WATER POLO

Goalkeeper Dan Hipp of No. 3 UC Irvine made 28 saves in two victories last week and was named men’s player of the week in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hipp, a senior from Fresno, tied his career high with 15 saves in a 10-2 victory over UC San Diego and had 13 saves in a 12-6 victory at Pepperdine.
