* Smart & Final Inc. reported third-quarter net income of $4.1 million, or 14 cents per share, contrasted with $2.2 million, or 8 cents, a year ago. Sales rose 6% to 587.3 million. Same-store sales rose 7.3%. The company attributed the increases to improved gross margins. Founded in 1871 in downtown Los Angeles, Smart & Final operates 220 stores in seven states and Mexico.

* Beverly Hills-based US Search.com Inc. said it cut 22% of its staff, or about 50 employees, in an effort to reduce costs and reach profitability. US Search, an Internet-based information search service, said the cuts would save about $2.3 million a year.
