Very few things in the life of a bargain hunter can be more of a turn-on than a real, genuine, honest-to-God outlet store. This is even more of a kick when it’s an operation like Sports Chalet.
Yes, they have an outlet where the inventory is made up of last year’s merchandise, discontinued items, some special purchases and a few irregulars in apparel. Needless to say, the prices are terrific, starting at 30% off, but most of the merchandise was 50% or more off the original cost.
We found several items that should spur you to make the drive to Montclair: a Pacific Extreme sleeping bag that retailed for $189.95 tagged at $99.50; a North Face women’s jacket for $109.95, $110 less than the original retail; and some Air Jordan athletic shoes at $79.96, which usually sell for $149.99. The day we checked, New Balance men’s basketball shoes were going for a dynamite price of $19.96 instead of $59.99.
Skis and snowboards are in demand right now and there are some excellent deals. A Sims cd144 snowboard usually retails for $279.99, but here you can get one for $169.96. And some Salomon K-2 152 cm skis for $259.96 are an excellent deal when you know that the retail price is $399.
We saw a good selection of apparel with the Patagonia label and quite a few pieces from Columbia. There’s also equipment for camping, climbing, swimming, fishing, tennis and scuba, as well as bicycles and exercise equipment.
All of this plus a knowledgeable sales staff.

Hundreds of used snowboards, skis, boots, bindings and poles have been placed on consignment and will be selling at giveaway prices.
