Trustees Delay Vote on Geography

Oxnard Union High School District trustees have postponed a decision on whether its five high schools should drop geography as a graduation requirement.

District administrators are recommending trustees take the geography off the list of courses required for graduation, instead making it an elective.

They say students need more time to either prepare for the high school exit exam or take electives geared toward college and vocations.

Social studies teachers, however, urged board members to keep the class as a requirement, saying it is an essential part of the curriculum.

After discussing the geography course at Wednesday night’s board meeting, trustees decided they needed more comments from parents and teachers before acting.

They are expected to continue the discussion in December.
