Manila Garbage Dump Reopens

Facing mounting garbage problems, officials in a suburb here said Thursday that they had reopened a garbage dump that collapsed four months ago, killing at least 218 people.

Piles of garbage have littered many streets in Quezon City since the dump was closed by Philippine President Joseph Estrada after a rain-soaked mountain of trash there crashed down on nearby shanties July 10.

Authorities say more than 100 people are missing and presumed buried in the dump.

Mayor Mel Mathay ordered part of the dump site reopened after a typhoon damaged a bridge leading to a nearby landfill, making the trip there by dump truck longer.
