Twenty-three members of a Pennsylvania church group were infected with a potentially serious fungal disease during a church-building trip to Mexico, government researchers said Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the church members developed flu-like symptoms found to be coccidioidomycosis, also known as San Joaquin Valley fever. If untreated, the infection can cause meningitis.

The CDC did not identify the hometowns of the Pennsylvanians or the church.
