From Times Wire Reports

At least 31 people were killed in two days of protests by Mozambique’s opposition Renamo party against a general election result last December, a government spokesman said. Opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama said he had called off the demonstrations, and calm apparently returned to most parts of the former Portuguese colony. Renamo supporters say the election, in which Joaquim Chissano of the rival Frelimo party narrowly beat Dhlakama, was rigged. However, international observers and the country’s election commission have said it was fair.
