Journalists Survive as Bomb Fails to Go Off
Two Spanish journalists narrowly survived an assassination attempt in the Basque city of San Sebastian when a bomb in a flowerpot near the front door of their apartment failed to explode. Police immediately blamed members of the Basque separatist group ETA. The journalists were Aurora Intxausti of El Pais, Spain’s largest daily, and her husband, Juan Palomo, of the Antena 3 television station. Hours before the attempt, police in the nearby city of Bilbao arrested four suspected ETA members, dismantling a commando group apparently created to replace one that blew itself up by accident Aug. 7 in an explosives-laden car, the government said.
