Network Appliance Inc., which builds “virtual” warehouses for the Web, said that fiscal second-quarter earnings jumped 128%, edging past forecasts, on strong demand for its products. Sunnyvale-based Network Appliance reported net income of $36.6 million, or 10 cents per share, versus $16.1 million, or 5 cents, a year ago. Shares closed up $11.75, or 14%, at $96.25 on Nasdaq, before the results were released. The stock lost most of its gains in after-hours U.S. trading, falling to $87.25 on the Instinet trading system. Sales in the quarter rose 109% to $260.8 million.
