Longtime City Councilman John Ferraro was honored Thursday when a downtown structure was dedicated in his name. A bust of Ferraro and a sign renaming the Department of Water and Power building were unveiled before a crowd of city officials and supporters.

“He was very pleased. It was a lovely ceremony,” said spokesman Gail Johnson, who added that Ferraro is still recovering from recent surgery for cancer of the spleen.

The USC band played and Board of Water and Power Commissioner Rick Caruso thanked Ferraro for his “lifelong dedication to public service.”

“We are a better city for your leadership,” Caruso said. Ferraro was on the Police Commission from 1953 to 1956 and joined the City Council 10 years later. Ferraro was the first council member in the city’s history to be elected to nine terms, Johnson said.

Since having surgery, the councilman has been back at his job on a part-time basis.
