No ‘Miracle’ Casting

Hollywood can make the audience believe that there are people in outer space, and that you can travel in time and part the Red Sea. They create special effects and monsters to rival anyone’s imagination but they cannot use a real blind, deaf (or both) person to play in another production of “The Miracle Worker” (“Body Language,” by Susan King, Nov. 12).

As adorable as Hallie Kate Eisenberg is, there is a lot more to being blind and deaf than learning Braille, giving blank stares and focusing on one’s forehead when speaking and grunting toward another person. In this day and age, was there a casting call for someone who has either or both disabilities to play the part of Helen Keller? Can an audience learn or experience what it is like to have these disabilities without using a disabled actor? JAY YEPP
