Jan Butterfield, 63, an art writer, critic and former executive director of the Lapis Press. Born in Santa Monica, Butterfield graduated from UCLA, where she majored in theater arts. After working at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for a number of years, she moved to Fort Worth in the 1970s to become an art critic for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. As a contributor to Art News and Art in America, she helped bring national attention to a young Texas art scene. After moving to San Francisco, she taught art theory, writing and history at the San Francisco Art Institute. The mission of Lapis Press, founded by artist Sam Francis, was to produce monographs on artists and to extend an awareness of the work of psychologist Carl Jung as it related to art theory. In 1993, Abbyville Press published her work, “The Art of Light and Space,” which defined an elusive genre of art practiced by Robert Irwin, James Turrell and Larry Bell.
