4 Executives in Milosevic Party Quit
Four prominent lieutenants of ousted Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic resigned from his party Saturday, criticizing hard-liners as standing in the way of democratization, the Beta news agency reported.
In a statement, Goran Percevic, Zeljko Simic, Zoran Milosevic and Momcilo Babic, all members of the Socialist Party’s executive board, expressed their “strong disagreement with all those who are trying to prevent transformation of the Socialist Party into a modern, European and democratic organization.” Zoran Milosevic is not related to the former president.
Although Slobodan Milosevic stepped down as president last month and is under virtual house arrest, he is believed to be trying to maintain his grip over the party.
The resignations reflect the power struggle within the Socialist Party ahead of parliamentary elections next month in Serbia, the dominant Yugoslav republic. Democratic parties supporting the new Yugoslav president, Vojislav Kostunica, are the overwhelming favorites.
