6 Teachers, 1 School Up for Art Awards

Six Ventura County teachers and one school have been nominated for BRAVO Awards for excellence in arts education.

They are among 63 teachers and 10 schools throughout Southern California nominated for the honors. Of the nominees, 56 are teachers or schools from Los Angeles County, eight are from Riverside County, seven are from Ventura County, one is from Orange County and one is from San Bernardino County.

The six local teachers are Ann Oppenheim, Jennifer Fry and Kristi Colell of Conejo Valley Unified School District; Bruce Colell of Oxnard Union High School District; Lora Marsh of Pleasant Valley Elementary School District; and Amy Friedlander of Oak Park Unified School District. The school nominee is Aspen Elementary in Thousand Oaks.

The BRAVO Awards, which started in 1982, are presented by the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. They honor teachers and schools using the arts to raise academic achievement, foster self-esteem and encourage teamwork.

Two teachers and one school will be chosen as winners and will receive their awards at a dinner on Feb. 26 at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The school will receive $5,000 and the teachers each will receive $2,000.
