Exhibit Displays Mulholland Items
An eclectic collection of rare William Mulholland memorabilia, honoring the engineer who brought Owens Valley water to Los Angeles, is on display through January at Cal State Northridge.
The exhibit includes family photos dating back to the 1890s, a hand-painted wooden “Mulholland Drive” sign from the 1920s and the academic hood Mulholland wore when he received an honorary doctorate from UC Berkeley in 1914.
“It’s a potpourri of personal items and photographs, things I’ve inherited through the years,” Catherine Mulholland said of the exhibit, which coincides with the release of her new book on her grandfather, “William Mulholland and the Rise of Los Angeles.”
She said she chose to display the collection at the university because she’s “always felt connected to CSUN.” A resident of Chatsworth for nearly 20 years, she has served on various university committees and used the library to research her book.
“I consider it the finest cultural asset in the West Valley,” she said of the library.
Displayed in CSUN’s Oviatt Library’s Exhibition Room, the collection can be viewed through Jan. 31 during regular library hours. For more information, call (818) 677-2271.
