Protecting Environment Is Focus of Episcopal Convention

Making good on a preliminary environmental commitment made a year ago, the six-county Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles will hold its annual convention Friday and next Saturday with the theme “Stewardship of All Creation.”

Since the diocese’s last convention a year ago, the church has been studying how its members can help protect the environment. A number of parishes have started to purchase “green power”--energy from renewable resources--and others have embarked on environmentally sensitive landscaping projects.

The Rt. Rev. Frederick H. Borsch, bishop of the diocese, will address the “importance of the wise use of environmental, spiritual and fiscal resources.” On Friday, “Jazz Vespers: Variations on the Stewardship of All Creation” will be presented by the Rev. Norman Freeman, a musician and vicar of St. Michael’s University Church in Isla Vista.

On another issue, the diocese will underscore the new full communion agreement between the national Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Lutheran Bishop Murray Finck of the church’s Yorba Linda-based Pacifica Synod will deliver the sermon at the Convention Eucharist. The convention will be held at the Riverside Convention Center, 3443 Orange St., beginning at 1 p.m. Friday. Visitors are welcome.

PEOPLE

Completing a full career circle, the Rev. William H. Goddard has been installed--again--as pastor of Pasadena First Baptist Church. He served there as pastor from 1968 to 1977, and left to minister in Denver, Illinois and Sacramento. Members of the Pasadena church voted in October to call him back. He received his master’s of divinity in 1962 and a master’s of sacred theology in 1963, before earning a doctor of ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
