Time and Topanga

I had to laugh when I saw the photo of the “I Slow Down thru Town” bumper sticker on the front page of the Valley section (‘Topanga Locals Try to Slow the Flow of Fast Commuters,” Nov. 18).

Last Sunday afternoon, I was northbound on Valley Circle Boulevard approaching the 101 [Freeway]. As I slowed for the red light in the right lane, a motorist (in a sports-utility vehicle, naturally) passed at high speed, swerved into my lane and slammed on his brakes to be first in line to enter the freeway. On his back window? One of the bumper stickers pictured in your article.

I guess the admonition to slow down doesn’t apply to neighboring communities like Calabasas.
