Edison

Coach: Rich Boyce

1999-2000 record: 8-16

League record: 1-9

The Chargers didn’t make much noise last season, but with so much turnover among league players and coaches heading into this season, things might be different this time around. Edison returns starters Matt Gonzales, a 6-0 senior guard, and Kyong-Su Min, a 6-1 senior forward. Rich Boyce, the Chargers’ first-year coach and one of four new coaches in the league, will need a breakthrough year from last season’s key reserves--Christian Prelle, Kyle McCarter and Richard Schwartz--to take a step forward in the league standings.

Esperanza

Coach: John Cyrus

1999-2000 record: 15-13

League record: 6-4

The Aztecs always seem to hover around .500 under Coach John Cyrus--who is 56-55 at the school in four years--and this season could feature more of the same. Esperanza has three solid returning starters in 6-0 senior guard Anthony Vicencia, 6-4 senior guard J.D. White and 6-7 sophomore forward Mark Lovein, but none is exactly all-county material. Vicencia, who averaged 12 points last season, should lead the way. Servite transfer Burke Spencer, a junior point guard, should see playing time along with returning reserves Felix Loc and Anthony Suite.

Fountain Valley

Coach: Chris Madigan

1999-2000 record: 14-13

League record: 3-7

Chris Madigan, the Barons’ first-year coach, has pretty good depth considering his team has only one returning starter, senior guard Chris Dailey. Seven other players are back, and newcomers Mike Guernsey and Zach Wheatley are potential starters. Madigan said his team is versatile enough to dominate in the post and succeed on the perimeter as well. Senior guards Daniel Torres and Tucker Fendon and senior forward Matt Ball are among the other returners.

Huntington Beach

Coach: James Dingus

1999-2000 record: 5-21

League record: 2-8

After a five-victory season, the only way for the Oilers to go is up. James Dingus, their first-year coach, hopes his team can play the role of spoiler this season behind the play of returning starters Drew Janovick, a 5-10 senior guard, and Mike DeHart, a 6-3 senior forward. Newcomers Nick Austin, Bryan Harrison and Mike Sullivan won’t have much time to get acclimated to varsity competition; they’ll probably start from the opening tip.

Los Alamitos

Coach: Russ May

1999-2000 record: 22-6

League record: 9-1

Don’t be surprised if Russ May, the Griffins’ first-year coach, puts out a mayday call early on. Los Alamitos, co-champion in league last year with Marina, has no returning starters and only a handful of players with varsity experience. Brian Rakusin, a 6-6 senior forward; Eddie Courtemarche, a 6-2 senior guard, and Ian Martini, a 6-3 senior guard, must lead an infusion of junior varsity players for the Griffins to even think about contending for a second consecutive league title.

Marina

Coach: Roger Holmes

1999-2000 record: 24-4

League record: 9-1

Roger Holmes, with all of six years of experience behind him, is already the dean of this league’s coaches. With only two returning starters, he may need to rely on that experience to win a second consecutive league title. Beau Brown, a 5-11 senior guard, and Chris DeLuca, a 6-5 senior forward, are back, but beyond them there’s no experienced depth. Brown will give the Vikings a threat from beyond the three-point arc, and Holmes expects his team to feature good speed.
