* Transmeta Corp., a Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker that competes with Intel Corp., said Japan’s NEC Corp. is recalling about 300 notebook computers using Transmeta’s Crusoe microprocessors because of a possible glitch. The chips could fail if a user reinstalls the computer’s operating system, Transmeta said. The company said NEC will exchange users’ computers and has returned all remaining chips from the manufacturing batch affected by the problem. Transmeta’s Crusoe chip is designed to use less power than conventional microprocessors and lets laptop PCs work longer between battery charges.
